Cook Stove

Popularized in the late 18th century, cast iron stoves quickly became a common feature in Victorian households used for heating and cooking. The cook stove features a flat top to accommodate cookware, while the Acme heating stove in the parlor has only a small flat surface, but two detachable bed warmers. Both stoves were designed to burn wood and while the Trumans lived in Lamar, wood and coal were readily available sources of fuel.

American Legion Monument

In 1917, after the U.S. entered into World War I, Harry Truman reenlisted into the Missouri National Guard and the following year, he and the 129th Field Artillery were deployed to France. Within months, officials promoted Truman to captain and he successfully led Battery D through combat. In 1919, shortly after the war ended, soldiers organized the American Legion and the same year, Congress incorporated it as a nonpolitical veteran organization meant to promote peace, defend the Constitution, preserve military memories and serve the country. Upon his return to Missouri from Europe, Harry helped establish American Legion posts and later became the first Legionnaire president. In 1949, Truman received the Legion’s Distinguished Service Medal and after his presidency, Truman remained an active member at his local Independence post. In 1984, the American Legion erected this monument in Truman’s honor. Image courtesy of the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum.

Anderson S. Truman, (1816-1887)

Anderson Truman, grandfather to Harry Truman, was born in Shelby County, Kentucky where he met and married Mary Jane Holmes. In 1846, the couple moved to Jackson County, Missouri where they established a family and farm near Westport Landing. In 1850, Truman owned 80 acres, an enslaved woman and two girls, $150 worth of livestock and grew potatoes, oats, corn and wheat. Three years later, the family moved to Platte County, where they lived for 13 years, until Anderson purchased a farm just south of Kansas City. After Mary Jane died in 1878, Anderson continued to farm with his youngest son, John, until around 1881 when John married Martha Young and moved to Lamar. Soon after, Anderson sold his 200-acre farm and moved to Lamar, and continued to live with John and Martha until his death in 1887, when Harry was only three. Image courtesy of the Harry S. Domestic Sewing Machine, 1878

In the Victorian period, sewing was both a necessary skill and a hobby. Women, responsible for the domestic work, repaired and sometimes made the family’s clothing and linens. The modern sewing machine, patented in 1847, significantly sped up the stitching process, but was financially out of reach for most households. By the 1880s, sewing machines were still pricey, but becoming attainable for middle class homes. When the Trumans lived in Lamar, stores sold sewing machines, premade clothing and a variety of fabrics. Image courtesy of the Library of Congress.

In 1882, John and Martha Truman purchased this house from builder, Simon Blethroade, for $685. Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President, was born in this house on May 8, 1884. Just 11 months later, John sold the house and moved the family near Belton, Missouri. In 1920, Walter Earp, the first cousin of the notorious frontier lawman Wyatt Earp, purchased the house and it stayed in their family until 1957, when they sold it to the United Auto Workers. The United Auto Workers had the house restored, erected a monument and donated it to the State of Missouri for a historic site in 1959. President Truman, living in Independence at the time, attended the dedication ceremony and signed the guest book as “Retired Farmer.”

Harry S. Truman Monument

Harry returned from Europe at the end of World War I, and in 1919, married Bess Wallace and co-opened a haberdashery that went bankrupt in 1921. In 1922, the Kansas City Democratic machine, controlled by political boss Tom Pendergast, helped elect Harry as a Jackson County Court Judge. Pendergast also supported his 1934 run for U.S. senator, which won Harry the seat and criticism for his relationship with Pendergast. From 1935 to 1945, Truman served as a Democratic U.S. senator and earned a reputation for being honest and hard working. In 1944, he ran with President Franklin D. Roosevelt for the vice presidency and won. Less than three months into the term, Roosevelt suddenly died and Truman became the 33rd president. Within the first few months of presidency, Truman over saw the end of World War II in Europe and made the decision to drop two atomic bombs on Japan. In 1948, Truman desegregated the armed forces and won reelection. Following his second presidential term, he retired to Independence where he remained active—writing, helping establish his presidential library and taking long walks. On December 26, 1972, he died at the age of 88.

Harry S. Truman, (1884-1972)

On May 8, 1884, Martha Truman gave birth to Harry in this room and was attended to by Dr. William Griffin. As a boy, Harry attended public schools in Independence, Missouri, and graduated high school in 1901. After graduation, Harry’s poor vision prevented him from attending West Point military academy, and his family’s financial troubles stopped him from attending a four-year college. Instead, Harry worked various jobs until 1906, when he moved to the Young family farm to help his father run it. Harry worked on the farm for over a decade and for several of those years, served in the National Guard. In 1917, when the U.S. entered World War I, Harry served in the 129th Field Artillery in France where he was promoted to Captain. After two years at war, he returned to Independence and married Bess Wallace, a fellow high school graduate he had courted for years. In 1924, the couple had their only child, Mary Margaret. John A. Truman, (1851-1914)

John Truman, father to Harry Truman, was a Jackson County native and farmer in his early years. In 1881, John married Martha Young and in 1882, moved to Lamar. There, John became a father and mule trader. Although it no longer exists, John Truman’s mule barn stood here. After about three years, he moved the family to a farm near Belton and in 1887 moved to the Young farm and briefly partnered with Martha’s father, Solomon. In 1890, the family moved to Independence where Harry attended school and John’s investments lost the family savings, compelling them to return to the Young farm in 1906. In 1914, John died at the age of 62 following a stomach operation. Image of John courtesy of Deane and the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum.

Ladies Shoes

These size 3.5, leather ladies shoes were found in the parlor’s west wall during restoration. Well-worn and made by the Ryan Brown Shoe Company in St. Louis, most likely the builder, Simon Blethroade, or the Trumans placed it here. Intentionally hidden shoes have been found in various buildings throughout the United Kingdom, but also in North America, Europe and Australia. The most popular theories are that this superstitious act was either to ward off bad spirits or to bring good luck.

Martha Ellen Young, the mother to Harry Truman, was born in Jackson County, Missouri, to Solomon and Harriet Young. Solomon and Harriet were both born in Kentucky and settled in southwest Jackson County, where Solomon became a wealthy farmer. Martha grew up on her family’s farm and after marrying local farmer, John Truman, in 1881, the couple moved to Lamar, Missouri. In Lamar, John traded mules, and Martha had a stillbirth before Harry was born on May 8, 1884. In 1885, the family moved near Belton, where John Vivian was born, and in 1887 to Martha’s family farm, where Mary Jane was born. In 1890, the family moved to Independence where the children attended school. In 1905, the Trumans moved back to the farm to operate and manage it, and the following year, 22 year-old Harry joined them to help. Martha continued to live in Grandview until her death at the age of 94. Image courtesy of the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum.

Site History

In 1857, American settlers incorporated the town of Lamar within the native tallgrass prairie ecosystem that the Osage once occupied. Largely settled by a community of livestock and grain farmers, Lamar suffered from guerilla warfare during the Civil War and took years to recover. In 1880, Lamar secured the Kansas City, Ft. Scott and Gulf railroad, along with the Missouri Pacific the following year, which brought fast and reliable transportation to the area. Near the same time, newlyweds John and Martha Truman moved from Kansas City to Lamar. There they purchased this six-room house and a mule barn diagonally across the street, and started their family. In Lamar, Martha gave birth to Harry S., on May 8, 1884 who went on to become the 33rd President of the United States. Less than a year later, the Truman family moved and the property had several owners until 1957 when the United Auto Workers purchased it in honor of Harry Truman and his support for unions during his presidency. Following restoration, the United Auto Workers donated the historic site to the State of Missouri, which opened to the public in 1959. Truman attended the dedication and signed the guest register as “Harry S Truman, Independence, MO, Retired Farmer.”
