Unmarked Graves, 1837-1880

Unmarked and unknown graves are scattered throughout the Boone Cemetery, denoted by simple pieces of natural limestone, a depression or nothing at all. Ground-penetrating radar indicated the presence of at least five unmarked graves. One belongs to Olive’s mother, Marjory Van Bibber who died at the age of 104. She accompanied Olive and Nathan to the homestead in 1837 and lived her remaining years at the site. Another grave is that of James Murry, who was born in 1829 and died during the Civil War in 1863. His connection to the Boones and the reason he was buried in the Boone family cemetery, remains unknown.

Stone Pile

This stone pile represents a winter burial. When the ground was too frozen to dig a proper grave, people placed the deceased in a shallow grave and laid stones on top to prevent disturbance from scavenging animals. While it remains unknown who this grave belongs to, the careful stone placement shows that great attention was given to a loved one.

19th Century Shoes

During restoration of the Boone home, workers found these two shoes in the wall. Upon further investigation, it appears that the Boones partook in a custom known as concealed shoes. According to the tradition, hiding a shoe inside a wall, floorboards or attic brought good luck to the home and warded off evil spirits. Whether superstition or reality, three tornados directly hit the homestead destroying the outbuildings, but only breaking off the house’s south chimney.

United States Map, 1850

Nathan worked as a land surveyor for much of his adult life, which he learned from his father, Daniel Boone. Agricultural Field

Like many 19th century Greene County farms, the Boones had a diversified farming operation. Agricultural census records reveal that the Boones raised pigs, horses, oxen, sheep, corn, oats and wheat. Enslaved individuals worked these improved fields that by 1856 totaled 200 acres. According to the 1850 federal census slave schedule, the Boones enslaved 15 individuals to work on the homestead. Over the years, this number fluctuated between four and 15, depending on the number of births, deaths and people sold.

Barn-Frame Loom

The barn-frame loom gets its name from its mortise and tenon joint construction, often used in barns. Looms, such as this one, transformed spun yarn into cloth. The cloth was made into the family’s clothes, linens and rugs.

Life on the frontier of Missouri was not without sorrow. Many of the graves in the Boone Cemetery belong to children. Benjamin and Mary Boone, Nathan and Olive’s son and daughter-in-law, buried two of their children here. Minerva died in 1842 and Nathan died in 1845. Both children were younger than 2 years old. Another son and daughter-in-law of Nathan and Olive, John and Mary, also buried two children in the cemetery. Their sons, Walter and H. Wardlaw, died in 1848 after falling through ice. Walter, aged 3, died on Feb. 13 while his brother, age 5, died 4 days later. These graves also speak to the limited medical care and lack of medical knowledge at the time.

Coal-Burning Stove

Cast-iron stoves served as a cooking appliance and source of heat. The stove’s design concentrated the heat for cooking and came equipped with a temperature gauge. This particular stove is made to burn coal, which burned longer than wood and was readily available in the area, from Illinois mines. Companies delivered coal directly into the basement, through the coal shoot, and residents shoveled the coal into a chamber inside the stove and later emptied it to remove the ash. While an effective source of heat, coal burning also has negative environmental effects, which compelled the City of St. Louis to pass the first smoke ordinance in 1867 to minimize the air pollution. For decades the city struggled with air quality, even experiencing a black out in 1939. During the 1940s, the development of centralized, alternative power sources largely eliminated the need for individual coal-burning stoves.

Nathan’s desire to be closer to his family while stationed on the western frontier was one of the reasons he moved his family to southwest Missouri in 1837. On Feb. 16, 1847, Boone was made major of the 1st Dragoons. In 1850, he was given a commission as lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Dragoons. Nathan resigned from military service on July 15, 1853, because of failing health.

Olive, her daughters and the women they enslaved used this fireplace year-round. Cooking was a long, hot job that began in the early morning and took several hours every day. Only after working for Olive and tending to her family, did the enslaved workers return to their dwelling to cook, eat and sleep. Today, the location of the slave quarters remains unknown.

Moses Boone

A variety of records including tax, census, marriage and death, help historians piece together the lives of people otherwise forgotten. One of these people is Moses Boone. According to the Greene County tax list, in 1865 Moses owned two horses and three head of cattle. He married Catherine Goodall in 1868 per the Greene County Missouri Marriage, Book C, and the 1876 Greene County census shows him living in Boone Township. Four years later he is listed in the 1880 United States census living with Catherine, a granddaughter and two unrelated men. His household was listed one household away from Ann Boone, formerly enslaved by Nathan and Olive Boone, and five households away from Joseph D. Boone, Nathan Boone’s grandson. The final record of Moses’ life is his engraved headstone located in the African American cemetery at the historic site. Although no documents confirm Moses Boone being enslaved at the homestead, he clearly is tied to it in some way.

In 1781, Nathan Boone was born in Boone’s Station, Kentucky, to Rebecca and Daniel Boone. As a youth, he learned many skills, such as hunting, trapping, surveying and negotiating. These skills served Nathan throughout his life. At age 18, he started on a journey west to the Louisiana Territory. However, he did not get far before turning around to seek Olive Van Bibber’s hand in marriage. Shortly thereafter, newlyweds Nathan and Olive headed west to what is now St. Charles County, Missouri. There he built a small cabin, started his family, worked as a land surveyor and entrepreneur, hunted and trapped game and began his military career. He accrued enough wealth to replace the small cabin with a large stone home. In 1837, Nathan moved across the state into a newly-built log house in Ash Grove. He rarely stayed home for too long, as his military duty kept him away for months at a time. Nathan lived here until his death in 1856 at the age of 75.

Nathan Boone was a genuine Missouri icon. He was a hunter, soldier, surveyor, businessman and the youngest son of American pioneer Daniel Boone. His wife, Olive, was the resourceful caretaker of the homestead. She played a vital role in her family's survival on the frontier that allowed Nathan to lead the adventurous lifestyle for which he is known. The homestead could not have operated without the labor of the enslaved individuals. These people persevered while cooking, cleaning, farming, tending livestock and serving the Boones. Nathan, Olive, extended family and several enslaved individuals lived at the homestead from 1837 until the 1850s. After the deaths of Nathan and Olive, the homestead stood unmarked for more than eight decades. Nathan’s grave had no inscription of his name, and his story was almost lost. However, efforts by citizen historians of Ash Grove began to shine a light on his importance in Missouri history. In 1942, the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a memorial marker recognizing Nathan’s service in the dragoons on his grave. The Ash Grove community placed a matching headstone on Olive’s grave in 1985. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources acquired the property in 1991 and incrementally opened it to the public over the next decade. Site History

Spring

Located along the Road to Springfield, this spring served as the primary water source for the Boones. Water flows year-round and provided the stable water source needed for survival. The Boones used it for drinking, bathing, cooking and laundry. Imagine having to walk almost a quarter of a mile to get the water and then hauling it back in buckets. The availability of water, proximity to the road and abundance of natural resources were some of the reasons Nathan chose the site for his home.
