Scott Joplin’s apartment is located in a historically German neighborhood once called Mills Addition, which before 1855, was outside of St. Louis city limits. A German butcher named Nicholas Rider purchased the property in 1844 and later transferred it to his daughter, Julia, in 1870. Following the Civil War and emancipation, African Americans increasingly moved into St. Louis and this particular area. By the 1880s, the St. Louis’ Black population rose 6% and white residents moved westward. To accommodate the influx of people, two-family flats were subdivided into four-family flats, as was done with this building. The area also became increasing industrial, which attracted Black migrants seeking job opportunities during the Great Migration of the early 20th century. The area became a thriving Black community filled with businesses, organizations, schools and churches. However, during the 1950s and 1960s, the city demolished large swaths of the developed area in the name of urban renewal.

During the mid-19th century, the company became a leading household pianoforte manufacturer in the United States and England. They won multiple awards, patented their designs and the dolce campana attachment, and earned favor among famous musicians of the time. The company specialized in the square grand piano, popular from the 1830s until the 1880s when upright pianos became fashionable. Given the time, it is likely that Scott Joplin learned to play on a similar square piano.

During the early 1900s, the musical genre called ragtime dominated American popular music. Ragtime is a uniquely American phenomenon and Missouri musicians in particular, played a major role in its development and popularity. The genre of ragtime is loosely defined by its use of the piano and syncopated, or “off” beat, rhythms. In 1893, the World’s Fair in Chicago exposed huge crowds of Americans to ragtime for the first time. Although written years earlier, in 1897, Tom Turpin published the first rag by an African American titled Harlem Rag. Turpin along with Scott Joplin, Louis Chauvin, Arthur Marshall, James Scott and others pioneered the genre. By 1917, jazz was beginning to gain popularity and on Nov. 4 of that year, New York’s The Sun considered jazz a “ragtime by-product” and stated that ragtime “incited the colored folk to develop this latest form of rhythmical mania.”

A common form of employment for many Black women, this could include cooking, cleaning, laundry and providing childcare for wealthy families. One of Florence’s clients provided piano lessons for their children taught by Julius Weiss, and allowed Scott to join the lessons. Weiss trained under classical German pianist and composer, Salomon Jadassohn and taught with Jadassohn’s Manual of Counterpoint. This greatly influence Joplin’s unique style of combining the classical elements of his formal training with the syncopated rhythms of ragtime. According to Joplin’s wife Lottie, he often referenced the book, which his German piano teacher gave him, for teaching and composing.

In 1911, while living in New York City, Scott Joplin published the grand opera Treemonisha that consists of three acts, 27 musical numbers and 230 pages. The story is set shortly after emancipation with formerly enslaved couple Ted and Monisha and their infant daughter, Treemonisha, living and working on an abandoned plantation in northeastern Arkansas. Later the couple worked for a white family that in return educated Treemonisha who grew up to be a teacher and a leader. The opera begins with Treemonisha’s return home and emphasizes the importance of education and a progressive mindset. In many ways, the opera reflects Joplin’s own upbringing. Unfortunately, Joplin did not live to see a staged performance of Treemonisha and the opera was largely forgotten about until its first complete rendition in 1972. Seeking a larger market, in 1902 she moved to St. Louis where she opened a store, went door-to-door selling products and doing demonstrations, and founded Poro College. Poro College educated women to use and sell her cosmetic products, and created job opportunities in the community. Along with her products, Malone also taught students to use heated tools, like the hot comb and curling iron. These tools were heated in a fireplace or stove and then applied to the hair to straighten it or create big, smooth waves. Black women used straight hair as a tool to conform to white beauty standards. Images courtesy of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Companies delivered coal directly into the basement, through the coal shoot, and residents shoveled the coal into a chamber inside the stove and later emptied it to remove the ash. While an effective source of heat, coal burning also has negative environmental effects, which compelled the City of St. Louis to pass the first smoke ordinance in 1867 to minimize the air pollution. For decades the city struggled with air quality, even experiencing a black out in 1939. During the 1940s, the development of centralized, alternative power sources largely eliminated the need for individual coal-burning stoves.

Plumbed directly into the house, gas lines contained a valve at the end of the line, located inside of a lamp, used to control the flow of gas. When opened, the valve allowed gas to flow, which was lit using a match to provide lighting. Although a safer option compared to candles and oil lamps, gas lighting presents a danger when the flame unexpectedly extinguishes, but the lamp continues to emit gas.

In 1857, William Wallace Kimball began selling pianos in Chicago under the name W.W. Kimball and Company. By 1880, the company began producing and selling W.W. Kimball organs and in the same decade began manufacturing and selling pianos. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the company won multiple awards, gained international recognition and became a leading manufacturer of organs and pianos. By the early 1900s, Kimball began producing and selling player pianos, which used internal bellows operated by foot pedals and interchangeable music rolls to play professional sounding music with minimal skill. According to a 1913 Kimball advertisement in the Popular Mechanics Magazine, “now with the Kimball Player-Piano in the home, the young, the old and even the feeble “indoor” people can play and reproduce the “Grand Operas” or play any and all of the old time songs or popular pieces.”

Scott Joplin was born in roughly 1868 in Linden, Texas, near the Texas-Arkansas border to Jiles and Florence Joplin, shortly after the Civil War and the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans. As a boy, he attended school and learned to play the piano. As a young man, in a time of strict racial segregation, Joplin moved to Sedalia, where he attended George R. Smith College. Then he moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he prospered in the flourishing Black communities and made some of his greatest accomplishments. In 1907, Joplin sought new opportunities in New York’s “Tin Pan Alley.” By 1915, Joplin began exhibiting the symptoms of stage three syphilis, a centuries-old and highly stigmatized bacterial infection transmitted at birth or via sexual contact. Syphilis affected and killed peoples of all cultures, races and classes, until the advent of penicillin in the early 1940s. In 1917, at about the age of 49, Scott Joplin died. Today, many gaps remain in Joplin’s history and only three portraits of him exist. Image courtesy of the Library of Congress.

In St. Louis, Joplin lived in the heart of the city’s well-established and vibrant ragtime community, near the Black entertainment district called Chestnut Valley. There, the “Father of Ragtime” Tom Turpin opened his famous Rosebud Bar, where pianists from around the country gathered for cutting contests and to prove their ability. Within a few blocks of Joplin’s residence lived ragtime pianist and multi-instrumentalist, Sam Patterson, pianist Louis Chauvin, Louis’ elder brother and musician, Sylvester Chauvin, and bandleader William Blue. While Joplin resided in St. Louis, he composed several new songs including three that the T. Bahnsen Piano Manufacturing Company published, The Strenuous Life dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt, the opera A Guest of Honor and in 1904, The Chrysanthemum dedicated to Freddie Alexander, who became Joplin’s wife until her tragic death just weeks after their marriage. The piano was an important component in the 19th century, American middle-class home as a symbol of status, source of recreation and entertainment in the home. Stores commonly sold sheet music of the most popular tunes, making the sheet music cabinet a necessity for both the home and professional musician. With John Stark as his publisher, Joplin made a 20% royalty on the sale of his sheet music; considerably more than other ragtime musicians, but less than white musicians of that time. Joplin also produced piano rolls, phonograph records and taught music lessons to supplement his income.

From 1901 to 1903, Scott Joplin, the “King of Ragtime,” lived in this apartment, where he collaborated with some of the best musicians of the time and composed some of his most popular pieces. Joplin learned the piano as a child, moved to Sedalia, Missouri, where he established his musical career as a young man, then moved to St. Louis. In St. Louis, he lived in a historically German neighborhood, that following emancipation in the 1860s, saw a significant increase of Black migrants and Irish immigrants seeking work. Joplin, like many people, moved to St. Louis in anticipation of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair that offered employment and business opportunities as millions of tourists flocked to the city. The World’s Fair brought people together and generated a climate of excitement and enthusiasm, a major factor that led to St. Louis becoming the epicenter of the uniquely American musical genre of ragtime. The metal stars located on the façade of the Scott Joplin house, a common feature on brick structures, are called star bolts. Star bolts are anchor plates that connect the brick façade to the wooden joists inside, reinforce the structure and prevent bulging. Bulging happens as the wooden joists separate over time and the lime mortar disintegrates from prolonged weather exposure. Masons used star bolts as a quick fix to prolong the life of timber-framed brick structures throughout the 19th century into the early 20th century.

By 1885, Jack, with his eldest son Charles, opened the Silver Dollar Saloon. As a young man, Tom Turpin worked at his father’s saloon and played music at The Castle, a sporting house. In 1897, he became the first African American to publish ragtime, the Harlem Rag, and the same year opened his own saloon called Turpin’s Bar. In 1900, Turpin opened the Rosebud Bar located on 2220 Market Street and it quickly became the ragtime epicenter of the world. During the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, the Black community congregated there and listened to ragtime, as Black visitors were banned from the fairgrounds on certain days. During the early 20th century, Turpin owned and operated several entertainment businesses and was a well-known man in St. Louis. Today, this building simply stands as a representation of Turpin’s legacy. Music courtesy of Bill Edwards and image courtesy of the Library of Congress.

Joplin roomed in the apartment with George Watts, a barber. Watts, along with his wife, also managed the property on behalf of the Rider family who owned it.
