The Scott Joplin House
Scott Joplin’s apartment is located in a historically German neighborhood once called Mills Addition, which before 1855, was outside of St. Louis city limits. A German butcher named Nicholas Rider purchased the property in 1844 and later transferred it to his daughter, Julia, in 1870. Following the Civil War and emancipation, African Americans increasingly moved into St. Louis and this particular area. By the 1880s, the St. Louis’ Black population rose 6% and white residents moved westward. To accommodate the influx of people, two-family flats were subdivided into four-family flats, as was done with this building. The area also became increasing industrial, which attracted Black migrants seeking job opportunities during the Great Migration of the early 20th century. The area became a thriving Black community filled with businesses, organizations, schools and churches. However, during the 1950s and 1960s, the city demolished large swaths of the developed area in the name of urban renewal.

Boardman & Gray Piano, 1862
In 1837, in Albany, New York William Boardman and Jason Gray established the firm Boardman & Gray. During the mid-19th century, the company became a leading household pianoforte manufacturer in the United States and England. They won multiple awards, patented their designs and the dolce campana attachment, and earned favor among famous musicians of the time. The company specialized in the square grand piano, popular from the 1830s until the 1880s when upright pianos became fashionable. Given the time, it is likely that Scott Joplin learned to play on a similar square piano.

During the early 1900s, the musical genre called ragtime dominated American popular music. Ragtime is a uniquely American phenomenon and Missouri musicians in particular, played a major role in its development and popularity. The genre of ragtime is loosely defined by its use of the piano and syncopated, or “off” beat, rhythms. In 1893, the World’s Fair in Chicago exposed huge crowds of Americans to ragtime for the first time. Although written years earlier, in 1897, Tom Turpin published the first rag by an African American titled Harlem Rag. Turpin along with Scott Joplin, Louis Chauvin, Arthur Marshall, James Scott and others pioneered the genre. By 1917, jazz was beginning to gain popularity and on Nov. 4 of that year, New York’s The Sun considered jazz a “ragtime by-product” and stated that ragtime “incited the colored folk to develop this latest form of rhythmical mania.”

Boardman & Gray Piano, 1862
In 1837, in Albany, New York William Boardman and Jason Gray established the firm Boardman & Gray. During the mid-19th century, the company became a leading household pianoforte manufacturer in the United States and England. They won multiple awards, patented their designs and the dolce campana attachment, and earned favor among famous musicians of the time. The company specialized in the square grand piano, popular from the 1830s until the 1880s when upright pianos became fashionable. Given the time, it is likely that Scott Joplin learned to play on a similar square piano.

By the 1930s, indoor plumbing that consisted of running water and toilets was becoming standard in middle-class American homes. This particularly tall window slides open and the supporting panels swing inward. This design allows the window to second as a door for access to the sleeping porch. It also serves as a source of lighting and ventilation. Before modern utilities, people slept on porches and decks during the hot summer months in an attempt to stay cool.

Developed in England during the late 18th century, the use of gas for lighting both inside and outside of homes quickly spread to the urban United States. Plumbed directly into the house, gas lines contained a valve at the end of the line, located inside of a lamp, used to control the flow of gas. When opened, the valve allowed gas to flow, which was lit using a match to provide lighting. Although a safer option compared to candles and oil lamps, gas lighting presents a danger when the flame unexpectedly extinguishes, but the lamp continues to emit gas.

Within a few blocks of Joplin’s residence lived ragtime pianist and multi-instrumentalist, Sam Patterson, pianist Louis Chauvin, Louis’ elder brother and musician, Sylvester Chauvin, and bandleader William Blue. While Joplin resided in St. Louis, he composed several new songs including three that the T. Bahnsen Piano Manufacturing Company published, The Strenuous Life dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt, the opera A Guest of Honor and in 1904, The Chrysanthemum dedicated to Freddie Alexander, who become Joplin’s wife until her tragic death just weeks after their marriage. From 1901 to 1903, Scott Joplin, the “King of Ragtime,” lived in this apartment, where he collaborated with some of the best musicians of the time and composed some of his most popular pieces. Joplin learned the piano as a child, moved to Sedalia, Missouri, where he established his musical career as a young man, then moved to St. Louis. In St. Louis, he lived in a historically German neighborhood, that following emancipation in the 1860s, saw a significant increase of Black migrants and Irish immigrants seeking work. Joplin, like many people, moved to St. Louis in anticipation of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair that offered employment and business opportunities as millions of tourists flocked to the city. The World’s Fair brought people together and generated a climate of excitement and enthusiasm, a major factor that led to St. Louis becoming the epicenter of the uniquely American musical genre of ragtime. In 1907, Joplin left St. Louis for New York’s “Tin Pan Alley,” the heart of popular music at the turn of the 20th century. Star Bolts
The metal stars located on the façade of the Scott Joplin house, a common feature on brick structures, are called star bolts. Star bolts are anchor plates that connect the brick façade to the wooden joists inside, reinforce the structure and prevent bulging. Bulging happens as the wooden joists separate over time and the lime mortar disintegrates from prolonged weather exposure. Masons used star bolts as a quick fix to prolong the life of timber-framed brick structures throughout the 19th century into the early 20th century.

During the early 20th century, Turpin owned and operated several entertainment businesses and was a well-known man in St. Louis. Commonly, men kept a shave mug, soap, brush and straight razor, but also visited barbers. Barbery was a common, skilled profession for men that required a state license. Joplin roomed in the apartment with George Watts, a barber. Watts, along with his wife, also managed the property on behalf of the Rider family who owned it.
