Site History

In 1833, the Missouri Legislature established Pettis County, formerly Osage territory. In late 1860, Sedalia became a town and that following year, the location where the Missouri-Pacific railroad terminated. The railroad, largely responsible for Sedalia’s early success, created jobs and transported people and goods. Following the Civil War, Sedalia’s population and infrastructure grew significantly. When John Homer Bothwell moved there in 1871, the town had a population of over 4,000. After two and half decades of financial success, in 1896 John an attorney, businessman, philanthropist and widower, purchased 55 undeveloped acres 6 miles north of Sedalia. The property included woodland, pastureland and an imposing bluff where he intended to build the home he called Stonyridge Farm. The following year, the 46-year-old began construction that in all would entail four separate phases and take 30 years to complete. In 1929, just a year after the completion of the final phase, Bothwell died. As written in his will, the estate was handed over to the Bothwell Lodge Club, and then donated to the State of Missouri in 1969. Today, the State has preserved much of John Bothwell’s personal belongings that remained in the lodge, along with some pieces added during the Lodge Club years from 1929 to 1969.

Turn of the 20th Century Sedalia

When John Bothwell moved to Sedalia in 1871, the town’s economy, infrastructure and population were rapidly growing. This growth and success, largely contributed to the railroad, lasted decades. By the turn of the 20th century, Sedalia was a diverse community that had a bustling downtown, churches, saloons, schools, brothels, an elaborate courthouse and a thriving Black community. African American pianist, composer and “King of Ragtime” Scott Joplin, who lived and attended school in Sedalia, composed his famous Maple Leaf Rag in 1899. That same year, the town selected John to serve as an ambassador in a bid to secure Sedalia as the State Fair location. Soon after the committee selected Sedalia, the town began preparing for the first Missouri State Fair that took place in 1901. In the years following, Sedalia continued to grow until the 1920s when prohibition, railroad strikes and then the Great Depression took a toll on the economy.

Birds, 1882, Oil on Canvas

In 1882, two years before their marriage, John’s wife, Hattie, painted these two images of tied-up songbirds. That same year, she graduated from the Cincinnati Wesleyan College for Young Ladies. While her inspiration for the pieces remains a mystery, it is likely that Wesleyan exposed her to the works of popular artists like of Jean-Baptiste Oudry and John James Audubon, known for their wildlife paintings. For years, John kept these paintings before hanging them in the lodge. Today, three of Hattie’s paintings are on display in the lodge.

Ada Bothwell, (1883-1969)

Like her Uncle John and older sister Lucy, Ada Bothwell also grew up in Clay County, Illinois, and then went on to graduate from Northwestern University and teach high school for over two decades. Although Ada never lived in Sedalia, the community knew her for being a Bothwell Lodge Club charter member. For most of her adult life, Ada resided in Illinois with her long-term partner, Theresa Presel, until they moved and purchased a house in North Carolina where Ada died in 1969. Before John died, he established the Bothwell Lodge Club composed of 38 friends and family tasked with continuing Lodge activities after his death. As the last charter member of the Bothwell Lodge Club, Ada’s death triggered a clause in John’s will that donated the property to the State of Missouri. Image courtesy of Lloyanne Wallien.

This bathroom was installed to serve the “family wing” of the lodge, which also included three bedrooms for John’s cousin, Conrad Bothwell, and nieces, Lucy and Ada Bothwell. John had five bathrooms built into the lodge, each equipped with heating, electric lighting and exposed plumbing; typical throughout the lodge, for easy repairs.

First Phase Cottage,
1897-1898

In 1897, John Bothwell commissioned the construction of a seven-room “English style” stone cottage for his friends and family to use as a warm-weather retreat, while his full-time residence remained in Sedalia. Upon completion, he had the cottage equipped with indoor plumbing and a gas lighting system, then soon after, had a well dug at the foot of the bluff and other buildings constructed around the property. A large water storage tank once sat against the building, which collected rainwater, fed into the tank via gutters, that Bothwell used in the kitchen and bathroom located on the first floor to utilize gravity.

In 1913, John Bothwell began construction on a separate tower structure that contained a bedroom, office, library and workshop. Once completed, this second phase served as his residence, while he used the original cottage as a guesthouse. John built this second tower structure because of his love for entertaining and the need for more space for his guests. Until the completion of the next two additions in 1928, the house remained two separate buildings. This photograph shows the second phase constructed, with John Bothwell in the foreground, standing by the gate pillars.

Conrad Bothwell, (1873-1938)

In 1873, John’s cousin, Conrad Hall Bothwell was born to Helen and Charles Bothwell in Holden, Missouri. As a young man, Conrad moved to Illinois where he took a cashier’s position at the First National Bank. Later he moved to Mt. Carmel where he met and married Sina Smith in 1899, but never had children. In 1912, they moved to Sedalia and Conrad worked as a cashier of Sedalia National Bank, where he later became president, like his cousin John, until it closed in 1932, at which time he retired. Following his retirement, Conrad served on the board of Central Missouri State Teachers College and contributed to its development. While the couple owned a house in-town Sedalia, they spent enough time at the lodge that John gave them their own room and then in 1928, built a separate house for them. Upon John’s death in 1929, Conrad served as the executor of John’s will.

Delco Generator,
ca. 1916

Originally, John plumbed and illuminated the first phase cottage and second phase tower with Blau gas, similar to propane. John ordered tanks of gas from a Kansas City supplier, which they shipped via rail to Sedalia. Despite the cost and inconvenience of sourcing the gas, it offered a much safer lighting option than the common candles and kerosene lamps. During World War I, Blau gas became unavailable forcing John to find a different source of light. In late 1916 he discovered the Delco system and just months later had one installed in the lodge. The gasoline-powered Delco system came with a combustion engine generator wired to 16 lead-acid storage batteries. This single system powered the first phase cottage, second phase tower, the newly constructed garage and some driveway lights. Eventually, it would also power an electric water pump that John added to the cistern.

At one point, this closet was actually part of a ventilation shaft connected to the cave that runs underneath the lodge. Game Room

John Bothwell had a passion for hosting and entertaining his friends, family and even organizations that shared his interests; this was one of the main reasons he expanded the lodge to this magnitude. John used the game room for indoor activities like card games, but it also served as extra seating space at large Thanksgiving dinners and a dance floor when musicians visited. According to his obituary, John entertained hundreds of guests at the lodge and “many of them were very distinguished persons from all parts of the United States and abroad.”

Getting Started in Sedalia

After graduating from law school in Albany, New York, in 1871 young John Bothwell moved to the rapidly growing town of Sedalia, Missouri. Soon after arriving he opened the law firm Houston & Bothwell with fellow young attorney Franklin Houston. In 1885, just a year after marrying Hattie Jaynes, John went into business with her elder brother William, opening the law firm Bothwell & Jaynes. William suffered from poor health and after a brief illness, he died suddenly in 1891, ending Bothwell & Jaynes. During those two decades as a partner in a law firm, John also served as the assistant prosecuting attorney of Pettis County and as a circuit court judge.

In 1925, John Bothwell proposed the building of a modern, multi-story hotel and hospital in Sedalia. After discussion, Bothwell decided that he would donate the property and $50,000 in cash toward the hotel and then $80,000 in hotel stock plus $100,000 upon his death toward the construction of the Bothwell Hospital. In June 1927, the upscale Hotel Bothwell, including 109 rooms, a restaurant, beauty salon, coffee shop and more, opened. Upon the hotel’s completion, the Hotel Bothwell Committee presented John with this framed photograph to thank him for his funding and hard work to help establish the hotel. Library Books

The library was one of the main reasons for the construction of the tower phase. Like his father, who served as the local school director for several years, John valued education. In 1869, he graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science and then from law school at the University of Albany in 1871. Following his graduation, John moved to the rapidly growing town of Sedalia and opened a law practice. He remained a life-long learner and encouraged education among the local youth. In addition to building a rural schoolhouse, he also opened his library and donated funds toward the tuition of area children interested in furthering their education. The books in Bothwell’s library range in topics from world history to classic novels.

Upon his arrival, James focused on farming, then became a merchant and co-owned a general store; a change in occupation that would make him a well-known and wealthy citizen. James also served as the local school director for several years, sold land for the construction of a new school and was one of the first stock-holders in the local National Bank. In 1846, the same year he opened a joint mercantile, he also married Mary Ann Brissenden, and together the couple had seven children, John Homer being the second. During the fourth, and final, phase of construction, John had the music room ceiling vaulted to better accommodate this treasured piece of furniture.

Soon after in 1861, at the Governor’s request, Anderson organized a regiment of volunteers and received the rank of colonel. Following the birth of their third child, Hattie Ellen, the family moved to the newly established Missouri town of Sedalia. Just a few years later Anderson co-opened the First National Bank and became very wealthy. This allowed Hattie to attend Cincinnati Wesleyan College for Young Ladies, where she excelled in art and music. After Hattie and John married, the couple had one child that died at birth and the following year, on June 20, 1887, Hattie died shortly after giving birth to their second child. A well-loved member of the community and a congregant of the local Methodist Episcopal Church, Sedalia remembered Hattie as a virtuous woman and talented pianist.

Upon completion of the building, John donated this painting created by his wife Hattie that hung in the school, which one of the students shot it with a BB gun. The painting remained in the school until the 1950s when it was brought back to the lodge. In 1968, the public school district closed and sold the school to a private landowner.

Wall Safe

In 1896, when John began construction on the first phase cottage, he also became the president of the newly formed Sedalia National Bank and remained in that position until 1905 when he regretfully resigned. John left the bank because the West St. Louis Water and Light Company, which he helped found in 1902, demanded his time. He served as both the company president and attorney at different points until 1916. That same year, his new residence, the second phase tower was completed giving him space for a home office, library, bedroom, bathroom and workshop. John kept his important documents, such as titles and deeds, in this lockable wall safe.

For years, John kept these painting before hanging them in the lodge. Today, three of Hattie’s paintings are on display in the lodge.

Landscape, Oil on Canvas

In 1916, John Bothwell built and donated a schoolhouse and teacher’s residence near Stonyridge Farm. As a well-educated individual, John saw the value in education and helped make it more accessible to children in rural Pettis County. An advanced structure for its time, the school had central heating and electricity. Upon completion of the building, John donated this painting created by his wife Hattie that hung in the school, which one of the students shot it with a BB gun. The painting remained in the school until the 1950s when it was brought back to the lodge. In 1968, the public school district closed and sold the school to a private landowner.

The artillery shell casing used to make this lamp is one of the two the U.S. military fired in France to celebrate the ending of World War I. The inscription reads, “Presented to J.H.B. Fired 11 A.M. Bathroom

Bothwell Lodge,
Second Phase Tower, 1913-1916

In 1913, John Bothwell began construction on a separate tower structure that contained a bedroom, office, library and workshop. Once completed, this second phase served as his residence, while he used the original cottage as a guesthouse. John built this second tower structure because of his love for entertaining and the need for more space for his guests. Until the completion of the next two additions in 1928, the house remained two separate buildings. This photograph shows the second phase constructed, with John Bothwell in the foreground, standing by the gate pillars.

Bothwell Lodge, First Phase Cottage, 1897-1898

In 1897, John Bothwell commissioned the construction of a seven-room “English style” stone cottage for his friends and family to use as a warm-weather retreat, while his full-time residence remained in Sedalia. Upon completion, he had the cottage equipped with indoor plumbing and a gas lighting system, then soon after, had a well dug at the foot of the bluff and other buildings constructed around the property. A large water storage tank once sat against the building, which collected rainwater, fed into the tank via gutters, that Bothwell used in the kitchen and bathroom located on the first floor to utilize gravity.

Fourth Phase Connection, 1926-1928

In 1928, construction concluded on a fourth and final structure that connected the first and third buildings together into the single lodge, as we know it today. The fourth phase added two more bedrooms as well as a music room, game room and the breezeway that ties the lodge together. This aerial photograph shows the original red and grey-checkered pattern roof.

This wooden box serves as an entry point into the cave system that runs underneath the second phase tower and third phase extension of the lodge. Workers discovered the cave system while blasting the bluff and preparing for construction. John experimented with drawing the cool cave air through floor vents to act as a cooling system, however it relied on a strong westwardly wind to be truly effective.

After John abandoned the idea of a cave cooling system, he installed a floor, so that he could utilize the space as a closet.

Hallett & Comston Piano, 1884

In 1884, when Hattie Jaynes and John Bothwell married, Hattie’s parents, Col. Anderson and Mary Jane, gifted the couple this piano. Anderson Janyes and Mary Jane Brown married in their native state of Ohio, in 1858.

Hotel Bothwell

Following her mother’s death, Lucy lived at the lodge from 1928, until her death in 1953. While living in Sedalia, she continued her civic participation and after John died in 1929, she carried on the Lodge’s mission and commonly hosted local clubs. Although Lucy never married, she had a keen interest in floriculture and became an amateur photographer, taking numerous photos around the property that today give us a glimpse into her life.

Although the exact circumstances are unclear, at some point John acquired this secretary desk that belonged to his parents, James and Ann Bothwell. In 1840, James Bothwell, born in Athens County, Ohio, migrated to Clay County, Illinois, after living and working on his family’s farm for 22 years.
