Cast-Iron Stove, 1864

When the Anderson family lived here, their enslaved workers cooked the family’s food in an open hearth. To keep the house cool and reduce the risk of fire, during the warm months they cooked using the hearth in the summer kitchen instead. When the Davis family moved into the house in the 1860s, they purchased a new, four-burner cast-iron stove made in Lexington. The stove helped concentrate the heat and conceal open flames.

Closet

Closets, or small rooms used to store clothing, shoes and accessories, became popular in the U.S. around the turn of the 20th century. Before this time, people owned fewer possessions and articles of clothing. When they did need additional storage, they generally purchased wardrobes or chests. The early closets that exist, like those in the Anderson house, are often very shallow, adjacent to a fireplace and contain a series of shelves. Also called a press closet, its proximity to the fireplace trapped heat and people used the space to dry clothes during the winter.

Coal-Gas Chandelier

This chandelier was lit by coal gas that Tilden Davis produced. Coal gas is a highly toxic and flammable mixture of gases that is emitted when coal is burned at a high temperature in a sealed chamber. Piping distributed coal gas throughout the house and to the fixtures. Although only three fixtures remain, most likely every room in the house had a coal-light fixture when the Davis family lived here. Originally, when the Andersons owned the house, they only used candles and oil lamps.

Netting

For centuries, people in warm climates have draped netting over their beds to keep insects off them while they slept. In addition to being irritating, mosquito bites posed the serious risk of malaria. Malaria is a deadly disease spread by certain mosquitos that was common in the Missouri River valley and throughout the southern U.S. until eradication in the 1950s. Children under the age of five were especially susceptible to disease, hence the netting on the crib. However, in Missouri, the warm air, where the malaria-carrying mosquitos thrived and that compelled people to sleep with their windows open, was seasonal. During the winter, people replaced the netting and rattan rugs with heavy drapes and wool rugs to contain the heat.

The Anderson House as a Hospital, Sept. 1861

On the first day of battle, the Missouri State Guard troops overtook the Anderson house that the Union used as a hospital. The Union marked the house as a hospital, and the sick and injured who occupied it could do little to stop the State Guard. From the house, the State Guard had a clear view and shot into the Union fortifications, giving them a significant advantage. Union leader Col. Mulligan, outraged by the breach of war etiquette, commanded his men to retake the Anderson house by bayonet. After a violent countercharge and heavy casualties, the Union regained possession of the Anderson house for about an hour, until the guardsmen retook the house again for the remainder of the battle.

In 1851, Oliver Anderson began construction on this Greek Revival, two-and-a-half story brick house that overlooked the Missouri River. At that time, Anderson enslaved 44 people who handmade the bricks, dug the basement and laid the 6’ 11”, stone-and-mortar foundation. The house contains 14 rooms, nine fireplaces and native black walnut woodwork throughout. For months during the Civil War Battle, the house served as a hospital and during the Battle of Lexington it sustained a cannon shot and several rifle shots. After the war, Tilton Davis purchased the house and lived here for 50 years. In the 1920s, Lafayette County acquired the house and transferred it to the Anderson House and Lexington Battlefield Foundation in 1955. Just three years later, the foundation donated the Anderson house and a portion of the battlefield to the State of Missouri.

Before refrigeration and canning, people had to practice other methods of food preservation like smoking, curing, pickling, drying and fermenting. This sausage stuffer made it easy to stuff a mixture of ground meat, fat and spices into casings. Once stuffed, the sausages were hung and smoked, which prevented them from quickly spoiling. Commonly, people used the crocks for making sauerkraut, which is simply salted cabbage covered with water and left to sit. As the cabbage sits, natural bacteria convert sugars into lactic acid, giving the cabbage its sour taste and preserving it.

While some wreaths were kept as family heirlooms, women also sold wreaths, made custom wreaths, and across the country, entered their hair work into agricultural fair exhibitions.

Hemp Break

A hemp break is a hand-powered tool used to crush hemp stalks and separate the usable fibers from the woody exterior. When Oliver Anderson moved to Lexington, in addition to the house, he also built a large warehouse and steam-powered ropewalk to process hemp into rope. In 1860, Missouri was the third largest hemp producer in the country, and Lafayette County was the second largest producer in the state, with the largest enslaved population in the state. Hemp was primarily manufactured into sailcloth, bagging for cotton bales and rope. It is notoriously labor intensive to process and enslaved laborers generally performed this work. After harvesting the plant, the workers inserted bundles of hemp stalks into the hemp brake, extracted the soft inner fibers, twisted those fibers into bundles, and then “turned” the fiber bundles into rope. It was said that the highly skilled rope makers worked so efficiently that they could produce miles of rope in a day.

Missouri River

When the Andersons moved to Lexington in 1851, it was a thriving river town. The Missouri River provided a major route for transportation and the river bottoms provided fertile farmland used to grow cash crops and raise livestock. The use of slave labor magnified the quantity of production and profit, and made some people, like the Andersons, quite wealthy. Factories and warehouses lined the riverfront, and the town was home to three colleges. In 1860, Lexington was Missouri's fifth largest town, but after the Civil War, experienced an economic downturn and never rebounded. A major factor in this downturn was a shift in transportation technology from steamboats to railroads. In 1865, the groundbreaking Pacific Railroad that would stretch from the east to west coast reached Kansas City, but bypassed Lexington. Image courtesy of the Library of Congress.

In 1851, wealthy hemp manufacturer Oliver Anderson relocated from Kentucky and built “the best arranged dwelling house west of St. Louis.” In addition to his family home, he built a ropewalk and enslaved dozens of people to manufacture hemp rope. In 1859, Anderson lost his properties and possessions after a shift in the economy. The family stayed in the house until the summer of 1861, just months after the Civil War started and weeks before the Union army occupied Lexington. Union troops used the Anderson house as a hospital that became the site of violent conflict during the Battle of Lexington from Sept. 18 to Sept. 20, 1861. After the war, local attorney Tilton Davis purchased the home and lived there with his family for 50 years. In 1958, the Anderson House and Lexington Battlefield Foundation purchased the property and donated it to the State of Missouri. Soon after, the state opened it to the public as the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site. Image courtesy of the Library of Congress.

Stereoscope, ca. 1910

A stereoscope is a device that combines two of the same photographs taken from slightly different angles, into a single three-dimensional image. They were first invented in England during the 1830s, and by the late 1800s became a popular form of entertainment for upper-and middle-class families. Modern virtual reality devices use the same concepts employed in the stereoscope.

Sterling Price was born in Virginia and in 1831, he moved to Chariton County, Missouri, with his family. In 1833, Price married Martha Head and together they had six children. Three years later, he began his political career as a Missouri State Representative and over the next two decades, served as Missouri Speaker of the House, a U.S. Representative and Missouri Governor. In 1846, Price entered the military, and for two years served in the Mexican-American War. By 1850, Price owned a $10,000 estate and enslaved 19 people to work on his farm that produced 17,000 pounds of tobacco. During the Civil War, Price led the Missouri State Guard at the Battle of Lexington, and the following year was made a general in the Confederate Army. Price fought in the Confederacy until they surrendered in 1865. The following year, he returned to Missouri, and in 1867 died of cholera. Coincidentally, Oliver Anderson’s second wife, Louisa Price, was also Sterling’s cousin.

Surgery Tools and Supplies

The Civil War occurred during the 1860s, before the popularization of the germ theory and use of antiseptics and modern sanitation practices. On the battlefield, soldiers fought with rifled muskets and minie ball bullets, still considered new technology. The rifling significantly improved the distance and accuracy of the shot, while the minie ball made it more lethal. The soft-lead minie balls flatten upon impact, which shattered bones and destroyed tissue, in ways never seen before. The unprecedented rate and complexity of injuries lead under-trained and over-worked surgeons to perform a high number of amputations. Surgeons quickly performed major surgeries and moved between patients without proper washing, which led to a high rate of infection. During the battle, physicians performed surgery in this room using a door on legs for their table and blankets to absorb the blood. This surgeon’s kit includes tools such as a flesher, bone saw, tourniquet, forceps and suture supplies.

The Battle of Lexington, Sept. 18-20, 1861

Around July of 1861, Union troops moved into Lexington. They occupied the Masonic College, constructed fortifications around it and used the nearby Anderson house as a hospital. On Sept. 10, Colonel James Mulligan arrived at Lexington and led about 2,800 men into battle. The following day, Gen. Sterling Price and about 15,000 to 20,000 Missouri State Guard troops arrived in Lexington. Having just defeated Union troops at Wilson’s Creek, Price was determined to do the same at Lexington. The Missouri State Guard first encircled the Union troops. Then after receiving reinforcements, at 9 a.m. on the 18th they began firing and overtook the Union’s hospital located in the Anderson house. The following day, the State Guard continued to advance, cutting the Union off from supplies and drinking water. The morning of the 20th, they took nearby hemp bales, soaked them in water and used the wet bales as a movable shield to push further. Later that day, the Union surrendered.

William Oliver Anderson, (1794-1873)

Oliver Anderson was born to a wealthy family in Jessamine County, Kentucky. He served in the War of 1812 and married Mary Campbell in 1819. Together they had 10 children. In 1830, Anderson entered into the hemp production business and was one of Jessamine County’s hemp bagging and rope manufacturing pioneers. In 1842, Mary died and five years later, Anderson remarried Louisa Price. Around that time, Anderson’s hemp manufacturing businesses closed, and in 1851 he moved his family to a 67-acre tract along the Missouri River in Lexington, Missouri. In Lexington he built this stately home, a large warehouse and ropewalk, and quickly became one of the wealthiest men in the thriving rivertown. Just eight years later, unable to pay his debt, Anderson auctioned off all his property. His sons purchased the house and ropewalk, and the Anderson family remained in the house until just weeks before the Civil War battle. The following year, Anderson was arrested for supporting the Confederacy and imprisoned for nearly a year. Forced to stay in a Northern state, for months he moved from place to place, until returning to Kentucky with his family. Anderson continued to live in Kentucky until his death in 1873.
