Tom Benton died in this studio January 19, 1975 when he came out to sign his mural Sources of Country Music. Here is a blank canvas left in his studio at that time, ready for Benton’s next project.

Thomas Hart Benton came from a family of politicians. He was named after his famous great-grand uncle who was one of the first U.S. senators elected by the State of Missouri. Senator Benton was in office for 30 years, and was a very prominent figure in pre-Civil War politics. Tom’s own father, Maecenas Eason Benton, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for four terms. Much to M.E.’s chagrin, Tom was interested in art from a young age, and in 1907 he was finally allowed to attend the Art Institute of Chicago. He made this early classroom study there and gifted it to a classmate. It is a much different style than Tom’s later drawings, but you can see he already had some talent and was very influenced by his instructors, such as Ernest Peixotto. Embroidered Landscape, ca. 1925-1950
This textile was designed by Tom and embroidered in silk by his mother, Elizabeth Wise Benton. Her initials are sewn the lower-right corner. It is likely a scene from Martha’s Vineyard. Tom and Rita went to the Vineyard nearly every summer for more than 50 years, and Elizabeth also spent many years living on the island.

This textile was designed by Tom and embroidered in silk by his mother, Elizabeth Wise Benton. Her initials are sewn the lower-right corner. It is likely a scene from Martha’s Vineyard. Ten-Pound Hammer Maquette, 1965
Benton would create maquettes [3-D models] before painting on a canvas. These models, typically made out of clay or plastilene wax, helped Benton to get the highlights, shadows, depth and perspective he needed to paint his scene. For some scholars, Tom has had the reputation as a heavy drinker. However, he was usually just a social drinker. After a long day in the studio, he would come in and have some bourbon, martinis or wine with whomever was around for the cocktail hour. On occasion though, he could really tie one on and let his strong opinions get the best of him.

They often reused and repurposed items, and since Rita was an excellent seamstress, she could spruce things up by making slipcovers for old furniture and curtains for the windows. She once said that, “We weren’t poor. We just had no money.”

The free-standing fireplace and chimney in the foyer is certainly eye-catching. The large staircase to the second floor wraps around it and the eye is naturally drawn upward. This house has a surprisingly open floor plan for being built in 1903; this central fireplace would help heat the interior of the home as well as be a welcoming feature.

Jessie later referred to this as her “Medieval or Baroque Period.” Tom and Rita encouraged both of their children to pursue interests in art and music. The window to the left is unfinished because Jessie became interested in a boy.

An unusual triangular shape, the basement door was designed this way to prevent it from scraping the underside of the staircase, which runs from the 1st to the 2nd floor. The Benton Home has a fully finished basement, with 8’ ceilings and hardwood floors. Rita had the walls covered with pegboard to display additional artwork for sale, had a hallway converted into a fireproof storage vault, used a portion of the space as a framing workshop, and it is also where the family had their Ping-Pong table.
