Born in Pennsylvania circa 1776, Arthur Thome ventured southwest and became an early settler of Augusta, Kentucky. In the early 1800s, Arthur opened and operated a gristmill with slave labor, married his first wife, built a mansion named White Hall and served as a trustee of Augusta College. He was wealthy and respected in Augusta society until Thome’s eldest son, James, introduced him to Abolitionism. By 1836, Arthur freed 14 enslaved people and started harboring runaway slaves at White Hall as part of the Underground Railroad. In 1840, Thome served as the Vice President of the American Anti-Slavery Society in Kentucky. His overt abolitionism sparked outrage among pro-slavery Kentuckians, who drove the family out of the state. Around 1842, Thome moved to Clark County, Missouri where he owned a grist and wool-carding mill with his son-in-law, Edward Colton, and built a family home on the bluff above.

The under-trained rebels who operated the cannons rendered them largely ineffective as most of the balls landed in or across the river. According to some sources, the State Guard also had a cannon made from a hollow log that exploded with its first use, injuring several of the artillery men.

A commonly used type of bed at the time, rope beds have a headboard, footboard and two sideboards with rope woven in between them. Rather than using wooden slats or springs, rope woven in a lattice pattern supported the sleeper. Every few nights, the rope had to be tightened using the bed key to prevent sagging. Some believe the phrase “sleep tight” originated with the rope bed. The ottoman at the end of the bed, the nearby glass-front dresser and pewter dishware also belonged to the Bennings.

The Battle of Athens took place on Aug. 5, 1861 between the Missouri Home Guards who defended the U.S. Government and Missouri State Guards who defended the Confederacy and states’ rights, particularly the right to legally own and enslave humans of African descent. In July, Moore’s Home Guard troops occupied Athens, training and preparing for the war. In Athens, they had easy access to supplies shipped via the river or railway, although just days before the battle when a shipment of Springfield Muskets arrived, the men were prepared to use their own firearms. Just before 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 5, Martin Green’s roughly 1,500 undertrained and under-equipped State Guards approached Athens from three sides and were greeted by about 400 Home Guards. Battle quickly ensued, and as Moore’s troops advanced Green’s retreated. In less than two hours, the Home Guards claimed the first Unionist victory in Missouri.

Around 1842, slave owner turned abolitionist, Arthur Thome, moved to Clark County, Missouri and over the next decade, he came to own a water-powered mill and built this five-room timber and stone family home. Thome had the help of Black laborers that he hired after emancipating them in 1836. The house overlooked Thome’s gristmill and the Des Moines River. In 1855, Thome died and in 1858, farmer Joseph Benning bought the house. The Benning family lived in the home during the Battle of Athens when the pro-Confederate Missouri State Guard hit the house with a cannonball. The Benning family maintained ownership of the property until 1970 when it was donated to the Athens Park Development Association. Today the hole still exists and is one of the last remaining indications of a Civil War battle.

At that time, the Benning house was dilapidated, but since has undergone restoration to preserve its original features and repair damage. Today, vandalism remains from visitors long ago and stands as a reminder of the property’s previous condition.

James was born in 1813, in Augusta, Kentucky and was the eldest son of Arthur and Mary Thome. He grew up in a slave-owning household and witnessed the inhumanity of slavery. In 1834, Thome enrolled at Lane Theological Seminary and then attended Oberlin College, where he taught for a decade. During the mid-1830s, Thome became a radical Abolitionist, served in the American Anti-Slavery Society and co-authored Emancipation in the West Indies after spending six months there. He also helped his father understand the cruelty of human enslavement and convinced him to emancipate his 14 enslaved people. Thome continued preaching anti-slavery and aided Black families after emancipation while serving as a Presbyterian pastor in Cleveland from 1849 until 1871. After leaving Cleveland, he began preaching at the Congregational Church in Chattanooga and died of pneumonia in 1873.

The house of Jane Gray once stood here, where some of the heaviest conflict occurred during the Battle of Athens. Jane Gray née Phillips was born near Athens, Ohio in 1835 and moved to Iowa as a child. In 1853, she moved into this house after her marriage to James Gray, the son of Isaac Gray, who helped establish Athens in 1844. During the Battle of Athens, Colonel Martin Green sent his right flank, led by Major Shacklett, to this area where they met and exchanged fire with Colonel Moore’s Unionist troops to no avail. In 1863, James died and in 1868, Jane married his brother, George Gray, and they had two children. After 13 years of marriage, George died, and Jane remained a widow and in this house until her own death in 1921.

During the Civil War, Green became a prominent secessionist in the state and as a Colonel, organized and led a squad of pro-Confederacy rebel fighters. Just months later, he engaged in battle for the first time in Athens, where Colonel Cyrus Franklin, Major Benjamin Shacklett and their men joined him. The roughly 1,500 men camped southwest of Athens, approached the town at 5 a.m. and began the failed attack at 5:30 a.m. Although unsuccessful in Athens, the following month Green fought in the Battle of Lexington, Missouri, where they captured the Union Army. In 1863, at the Siege of Vicksburg, a Union sharpshooter killed Green allegedly after he ignored warnings to stay down and quipped that “a bullet has not been molded that will kill me.”

In Feb. 1843, the Missouri General Assembly authorized Arthur Thome to erect a 7-foot dam and 145-foot lock across Des Moines River to power his mill. In 1850, Thome and son-in-law Edward Colton employed six men and produced 3,600 barrels of flour, 40,500 barrels of corn meal and 500,000 feet of lumber, valued at over $39,000. On February 25, 1857, Colton announced in the local newspaper that the mill gave way to the force of ice and “fell into the river with a tremendous crash and disappeared in a minute.” Although no one was hurt and a large portion of the grain was saved, all of the machinery was lost, costing about $10,000. Just three years later, Colton and five employees ground 32,000 bushels worth of wheat, corn, rye and buckwheat and carded 10,000 pounds of wool. As the community of Athens disappeared, the mill became unnecessary and eventually closed in the 1880s. The large buhr stone and the pieces set in concrete, located on the embankment above, were found here, while the other stones came from different mills.

He explained where the fighting took place and how the pro-Confederate rebels attacked using “two cannon[s] shooting scraps of iron broken castings etc.,” but “failed to kill or cripple a single man.” Hiller later served in the Missouri State Militia Cavalry and rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant. After the war, he returned to Athens, continued in the mercantile business, served as postmaster, then moved to the town of Kahoka where he helped source the property and funding for the town square and courthouse. Hiller also wrote poetry and in 1899, his original piece “Destiny” appeared in the local paper just weeks before he died from a short bout of pneumonia. In 1975, the State of Missouri accepted a donation from the Athens Park Development Association of 235 acres in Clark County. The state reclassified the park as a historic site in 1985, after archaeological research located prehistoric Native American sites, a Sauk village occupied until the early 19th century, and the town of Athens established in 1844. Athens grew into a prosperous town with over 500 residents, 50 businesses, five churches and two schools. On July 24, 1861, Colonel David Moore and approximately 400 of his Unionist Missouri Home Guardsmen entered and occupied Athens, seizing homes and businesses from Confederate supporters to quarter and provision his troops. Confederate supporters rallied around Colonel Martin Green, who raised a militia of about 1,500 Missouri State Guardsmen. Around 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 5, 1861, Green’s men fired the first cannon at Moore’s men in Athens. Although Moore’s men were outnumbered and surrounded with their back to the river, they were better trained and equipped. The Battle of Athens lasted about two hours until Green’s men fully retreated, but the resentment between families and neighbors continued for decades. Following the Civil War and transition from river to rail transportation, Athens declined and by 1900, the once-thriving town had nearly disappeared. Although Moore’s troops were largely outnumbered, they did have some training, superior weapons and plenty of ammunition. These advantages allowed Moore to defeat the State Guard at Athens on Aug. 5, 1861. According to Colonel David Moore, “They [State Guard] were armed with shotguns and squirrel rifles which were no match for our improved muskets.”
